New Gates for Chinatown

To mark the UK China Year of Exchange, this gate was hand crafted in Beijing before being brought to London. The foundation stone was laid on Thursday 9 July 2015 in Wardour Street to mark the expansion of Chinatown and positioned according to traditional feng shui. Architecturally the arch differs from the smaller, ‘Westernised’ designs of the others in Gerrard Street, with better supports that allow for a larger structure to span the arch.

The original three arches were built between 1985 and 1986 in the Paifang style; magnificently decorating in keeping with tradition. The pillars are red, while the arch itself is has intricate designs and Chinese calligraphy, topped with a colourful tiled roof.
